Summary
50th anniversary of the Magnuson‑Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act (MSA) would be recognized and celebrated on April 13, 2026, praising the law for establishing U.S. federal fishery authority to 200 nautical miles, displacing unregulated foreign fleets, and creating a science-based, regional system of eight fishery management councils that include fishermen, State managers, processors, conservationists, scientists, and Indigenous members. The resolution would celebrate the MSA’s role in preventing overfishing and rebuilding 52 fish stocks, note overfishing was limited to about 4 percent of managed stocks in 2025, highlight reduced bycatch and benefits to coastal economies, seafood nutrition, recreation, and Indigenous practices, commend managers and stakeholders, and reaffirm a commitment to strong, science-based management to address persistent overfishing, changing ocean conditions, fishery disasters, and illegal, unreported, and unregulated foreign fishing.
