Debt collection protections for servicemembers
If enacted, the bill would make more people "covered members" under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. You would be covered if you are a servicemember, a dependent as defined in law, or if you left duty in the last 365 days. It would also cover certain people connected to a recently separated member as identified in federal law. If enacted, debt collectors would be barred from threatening to lower your rank, to revoke your security clearance, or to have you prosecuted under the military criminal code (the UCMJ). Collectors also could not say or imply those military penalties will happen if you do not cooperate. These rules would take effect upon enactment.
