Bigger Flatside Wilderness, fire response stays
If enacted, the bill would add about 2,212 acres in the Ouachita National Forest to the Flatside Wilderness, as shown on a map dated November 12, 2024. The enlarged area would be called the Flatside-Bethune Wilderness, and federal records would use that name. Wilderness status would bring stronger conservation rules and could limit logging, mining, and road building in those parcels. It would also confirm the Secretary of Agriculture could act to fight wildfire, insects, and disease there, under current laws and rules. These changes would take effect upon enactment.
