BAH Restoration Act
Sponsored By: Representative Strickland, Marilyn [D-WA-10]
Introduced
Summary
ties the basic allowance for housing (BAH) to the Department of Defense's area-specific housing-cost estimates. This bill would rewrite the statutory formula for BAH inside the United States so the monthly allowance equals the Secretary of Defense's determined monthly cost of adequate housing for the member's pay grade and dependency status.
Show full summary
- Service members and their families: BAH for service members living in the United States would be set to the DoD's estimate of adequate housing costs for their pay grade and dependency status, aligning payments with area-specific housing prices.
- Department of Defense: The Secretary of Defense would be responsible for determining the "monthly cost of adequate housing" for each area, pay grade, and dependency status and using those figures to compute BAH.
- Scope: The change applies to areas within the United States and affects all uniformed services members covered by 37 U.S.C. §403(b)(3).

Military housing pay tied to local costs
This bill would change how Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) is set in the U.S. For each area, the Defense Department would set the monthly cost of adequate housing by pay grade and whether you have dependents. Your BAH would equal that local cost. Your payment could go up or down compared with today, depending on the DoD estimate. It would only apply inside the United States.
