Civics lessons on communism for schools
If enacted, the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation would create a high school civics curriculum and oral histories called "Portraits in Patriotism." Lessons would compare communism, totalitarianism, and other ideologies with U.S. democratic principles, and work in social studies, government, history, and economics classes. The materials would be updated to cover past and current regimes, including ongoing abuses like Uyghurs in Xinjiang and actions against democracy in Hong Kong and toward Taiwan. State and local education leaders would get help to use these materials. The bill also sets learning goals: students would learn that communism caused over 100,000,000 deaths and that 1,500,000,000 people still live under communist rule.
