New screwworm control to protect farms
If enacted, USDA would have to start building modular screwworm fly facilities within 180 days in eligible State areas. Each site would rear sterile New World screwworm flies and send them to areas at risk. The bill would authorize $300 million, available until spent, to build and run these sites. The Secretary would pick eligible areas based on confirmed detections and migration patterns. USDA would also post a report within one year, and every year after, on the threat and how well these efforts work.
