Small grants for local hero memorials
This bill would create an Interior Department grant program, starting within 6 months of enactment, to help build or fix local memorials. Only local governments and nonprofits could apply for outdoor memorials they own or run, not items inside buildings. Grants could cover construction, restoration, renovation, or maintenance, up to $100,000 each, with only one grant per applicant or memorial per fiscal year. Recipients would need at least a 50% non‑Federal match; in‑kind help could count. The Department would prioritize strong community support and memorials that honor exemplary public service or life‑risking bravery; eligible memorials must honor veterans (service on or after April 6, 1917), service members killed on active duty (on or after that date), law enforcement officers, or firefighters. The program would be authorized $2 million each year for FY2026–FY2030.
