Downwinder Commemoration Act of 2025
Sponsored By: Representative Vasquez, Gabe [D-NM-2]
In Committee
Summary
Honoring New Mexico's Downwinders This bill would require the Secretary of the Army, the Secretary of the Air Force, and the Secretary of the Interior to obtain and place three honorific plaques in New Mexico to recognize communities exposed to radioactive fallout from the July 16, 1945 test. It finds that Downwinder communities suffered generations of health harms, including cancer and infertility, and it directs one plaque to White Sands Missile Range, one to Holloman Air Force Base, and one to White Sands National Park, all at publicly accessible locations to be obtained within one year of enactment.
