Show full summary
  • Families and households: Gives gun owners and households a visible, bilingual Lifeline contact (988) on firearms and packaging to share with anyone who may be at risk.
  • Manufacturers and retailers: Prohibits the sale or offer for sale of firearms that lack the required label and defines “retailer” to include dealers, creating a compliance duty for makers, sellers, and dealers; the rule takes effect two years after enactment.
  • Enforcement: Violations would be treated as breaches of the Consumer Product Safety Act and subject to the penalties listed in sections 20 and 21 of that law.

Bilingual suicide hotline labels on firearms

If enacted, gun makers and sellers (including licensed dealers) would need a suicide warning label to sell or offer a firearm. It must be in English and Spanish, display a yellow triangle right before "IF YOU," and direct people to call 988 and the Lifeline’s toll-free number (or any successor). The label would be attached to the firearm, or appear on the packaging and on any papers in the box. Violations would be treated like Consumer Product Safety Act violations and could face those penalties. The rule would start two years after enactment and would apply even though guns are usually excluded from consumer product safety rules.
