HR5415119th Congress

Nitazene Control Act of 2025

Sponsored By: Representative Vindman, Eugene Simon [D-VA-7]

Introduced

Summary

Permanently classifies nitazene opioids as Schedule I. The bill would amend the Controlled Substances Act to add 2-benzylbenzimidazole opioids, commonly called nitazenes, to Schedule I, name examples such as etonitazene, isotonitazene, and protonitazene, convert any nitazenes temporarily scheduled under section 201(h) into permanent Schedule I substances, and make clear that new research on these drugs still requires proper registration and scheduling compliance.

2 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 1 costs, 0 mixed.

Stricter federal limits on nitazenes

The bill would add nitazenes to Schedule I under federal drug law. It would cover the whole class of 2-benzylbenzimidazole opioids and related isomers, esters, ethers, and salts. Examples include etonitazene, isotonitazene, metonitazene, and protonitazene. Any nitazene that is temporarily scheduled now would become permanently Schedule I at enactment. This would sharply limit legal making, selling, importing, and possessing these drugs, except as allowed for research.

Registration needed to study nitazenes

The bill would not allow new nitazene research to start without proper approvals. Researchers, labs, and universities would need DEA registrations and must follow Schedule I rules. This requirement would apply upon enactment.
