Grants for school districts' legal costs

This bill would authorize the Secretary of Education to award grants to covered local school districts (LEAs). The grants would reimburse legal and related costs, including attorneys' fees and court costs, when a challenge is filed because the LEA decided not to remove an instructional or library material. Grants would only pay costs not already paid by a State or another person. The most an LEA could receive for each such decision is $100,000. Congress would be authorized to appropriate $15 million total for the program for fiscal years 2027 through 2031, and districts would have to apply as the Secretary requires. Awards could not be based on the content or viewpoint of the challenged material.
