Retirement benefits for tribal educators
If enacted, employees of tribally controlled schools that operate under an Indian Self-Determination contract or a Tribally Controlled Schools Act grant would be treated as federal employees for retirement purposes. They would become eligible for the Federal Employees Retirement System pension and for participation in the Thrift Savings Plan. The Bureau of Indian Affairs would pay the government (employer) contributions required for those retirement benefits. A covered employee could elect not to be treated as a federal employee under procedures set by the Office of Personnel Management.
