Clean Slate through Repayment Act of 2026

Sponsored By: Representative Ross, Deborah K. [D-NC-2]

Introduced

Summary

Automatic removal of Title IV loan default records after full repayment. This bill would add Section 494A to the Higher Education Act and require the Secretary of Education, guaranty agencies, or other holders of Title IV loans to request that consumer reporting agencies remove a borrower’s default record and any related adverse information once the borrower repays the full amount due on a defaulted Title IV loan. The rule applies only to Title IV loans repaid in full and does not establish penalties, funding, or direct obligations for consumer reporting agencies beyond the removal request.

Clear defaulted federal student loans after repayment

If enacted, the bill would require the Education Secretary, a guaranty agency, or other loan holder to ask credit bureaus to remove a reported default on a Title IV student loan. This would apply only after you repay the full amount due on that defaulted loan. The request would also remove related negative items from your credit history, which would improve your credit and make borrowing easier.
