Safe Check-Ins for Immigrants Act
Sponsored By: Representative Meng, Grace [D-NY-6]
Introduced
Summary
Lets certain immigrants check in by video instead of in-person. This bill would allow the Secretary of Homeland Security to permit an alien released under 8 U.S.C. 1226(a)(2) to satisfy periodic appearance requirements by video teleconference. It applies to people who must appear periodically before an immigration officer or before a case manager under an alternatives to detention program while a decision is pending on whether they will be removed from the United States.

Virtual check-ins for released immigrants
If enacted, you would be able to appear by video teleconference to meet required immigration check-ins. This would apply only if you were released under 8 U.S.C. 1226(a)(2). Also, it applies only when periodic check-ins with an immigration officer or an alternatives-to-detention case manager are a condition of your release. The change would take effect upon enactment. You would still need to follow supervision and reporting rules. This would likely reduce travel time and related costs for affected households.
