To amend the Public Health Service Act to update quality standards for mammography facilities for the use of AI systems, and for other purposes.
Sponsored By: Representative Schweikert, David [R-AZ-1]
Introduced
Summary
Authorizes machine-learning and artificial intelligence systems to perform and certify mammography functions previously reserved for physicians. The bill would amend section 354(f)(1) of the Public Health Service Act by changing the phrase "physician who" to "physician, or a machine-learning or artificial intelligence system, that", replacing "who" with "that" in a related clause, and striking the phrase "signed by the interpreting physician" so AI systems may fulfill the described functions for mammography facilities, and it specifies no new funding, tax changes, or sunset provisions.

AI allowed to read mammograms
This bill would let a machine-learning or artificial intelligence system, not just a physician, perform certain mammogram interpretation duties. It would remove the statutory rule that the interpreting physician must sign the item. The change would apply only when a mammography facility uses an AI system. The bill does not set new clinical standards, payment changes, or an effective date.
