Temporary federal gas tax cut
If enacted, you would pay no federal gasoline excise tax on gasoline removed, entered, or sold on or after the date of enactment and before January 1, 2027. The bill would direct the Secretary of the Treasury to transfer money from the general fund to the Highway Trust Fund and the Leaking Underground Storage Tank Trust Fund to replace the lost tax receipts. Those transfers would be treated as if they were the tax money normally credited to those funds, keeping them whole. The bill would say consumers should receive the price reduction right away, ask fuel sellers to lower prices accordingly, and authorize the Treasury Secretary to use applicable authorities to try to ensure sellers pass the cut to buyers.
