Grants to develop safer gun storage

If enacted, the bill would let the Attorney General award grants to colleges and gun makers to research and develop safer firearm storage technology. Grants would fund work on devices such as locks using biometric data and studies of consumer willingness and strategies to increase use. Applicants would need a detailed plan, a description of how the device would improve community safety, and a plan showing how funding would increase consumer access and lower cost. Each grant recipient would report annually to the Attorney General. The bill would authorize $10 million per year for fiscal years 2027 through 2030. It would also define what counts as a "safe firearm storage device" and use the federal definitions of "firearm" and "ammunition" for the program, and require a report to Congress within one year on deployment and suicide-prevention steps.
