Tax relief for first responder beneficiaries
If enacted, you would be able to exclude certain death-related pay you receive after a public safety officer dies. The bill would replace the phrase "surviving dependents" with "surviving beneficiaries," widening who can use that income exclusion. It would also let named beneficiaries of a public safety officer's life insurance or benefit plan be treated like a child for survivor annuity purposes. These changes would apply to taxable years beginning after December 31, 2022.
