New grants to protect livestock herds
This bill would create a USDA grant program to help cooperative extension services prepare for and respond to New World screwworm outbreaks. The Secretary of Agriculture would award competitive grants and give priority to extension services in States or Tribal areas at higher risk. Grants would pay for training, livestock inspections and inspector training, producer education (workshops, field demos, outreach, materials), and direct technical assistance to producers on prevention, monitoring, treatment, biosecurity, and reporting. The Secretary would coordinate with APHIS, State animal health officials, veterinarians, Tribal agricultural programs, and land‑grant universities, and the bill would authorize such sums as may be necessary.
