More healthy foods at commissaries
If enacted, the bill would require the Defense Commissary Agency to run a program to increase availability, visibility, affordability, and promotion of healthy foods at U.S. commissaries. The agency would appoint a Director of Healthy Foods. Not later than 180 days after enactment, the Secretary of Defense, with HHS and USDA, would send a plan to specified congressional committees. The plan must include a timeline, use of local farmers and markets, and actions and resources for coordination, procurement best practices, education, and data sharing. The agencies would brief Congress within 30 days after the plan and set joint procedures within 180 days after the plan. The Director would do local outreach to nearby farms and markets and the agency would post commissary-specific healthy food resources on its website within 180 days after the plan. The Secretary of Defense would report on implementation within one year after the plan. These requirements would end on December 31, 2030. The bill would define "healthy food" by the most recent Dietary Guidelines.
