Summary

James Lick Observatory's 150th anniversary is the focus of this resolution, which would congratulate the observatory as it marks June 7, 2026 and recognize its sustained contributions to astronomy and science. It would note James Lick's 1874 gift of $700,000, now worth more than $1 billion, the observatory's Mount Hamilton home and the 1876 congressional land reservation, the 1888 Great Refractor and early breakthroughs such as the first photographic discovery of a comet, identification of a fifth moon of Jupiter, and the eclipse test supporting Einstein's general theory of relativity, and it would praise the observatory's leadership in adaptive optics, early exoplanet work, research and training through the University of California Observatories and partnerships with California's state universities and community colleges, public outreach that reaches tens of thousands, and encourage continued federal, state, and private support for its research, education, and public programs.
