Awareness of Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD). This resolution would designate November 12, 2025 as Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease Awareness Day to promote recognition of this rare, rapidly progressive, and invariably fatal prion disease. CJD occurs in about 1 to 2 people per million each year, roughly 600 cases in the United States, with about 85% classified as sporadic, 10–15% genetic, and under 1% acquired. Early signs include failing memory, behavior changes, trouble with coordination, and visual problems, and death typically follows within months to a year. The text highlights the critical role of the National Prion Disease Pathology Surveillance Center as the only U.S. laboratory-based organization monitoring human prion diseases and stresses the need for robust prion surveillance, postmortem brain testing, and study of links to chronic wasting disease in deer and other cervids. It also notes the heavy burdens on patients, families, and caregivers caused by the disease’s rapid course.
