Education help for public safety officers
If enacted, the bill would create a federal education assistance program for public safety officers and some of their children. You would receive direct payments for approved higher education programs. To apply, an officer would need at least 8 years with one employer and must commit to 4 more years after applying. Payments would follow the formula in 38 U.S.C. 3532 and could be reduced under section 3065(b). Benefits could not exceed 45 months of full-time study (or a part-time equivalent). An officer could transfer part or all eligibility to a child, but a child could not get assistance after age 27. The Attorney General would approve or deny applications in writing and could stop payments if a recipient fails to meet academic progress rules.
