State Safe Routes Coordinator Required
If enacted, each State would have to name a Safe Routes to School coordinator. That person would serve as the State program's main contact. The Secretary would be barred from making the coordinator do duties not authorized by Congress. A State could designate an existing State employee as the coordinator. States would have to post the coordinator's contact on the State DOT website. If the job becomes vacant, States would have to fill it within 180 days. States could use amounts made available under section 133(h) or section 148 to pay the coordinator's salary. This would take effect upon enactment.
