Treasury report on debt risks

This bill would require the Treasury Secretary, with Defense and State, to report on how rising national debt and net interest threaten U.S. national security. The first report would be due not later than one year after enactment. Later reports would be due when the national defense strategy is sent to Congress. The report would assess effects on defense budgets, federal revenue, the dollar, credit ratings, inflation, interest rates, and the government’s ability to pay Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and other mandatory programs. It would also assess whether interest payments could crowd out defense, diplomacy, or public investment and give legislative recommendations. The Comptroller General would add this issue to the GAO High Risk List on enactment.
