Sponsored By: Senator Warren, Elizabeth [D-MA]

Recognizes World War II United States Cadet Nurse Corps service as active duty for certain Department of Veterans Affairs benefits. This bill would make Cadet Nurse Corps members eligible for specified VA benefits and require the Department of Defense to issue discharges and allow honors.

Show full summary
  • Cadet Nurse Corps members who served July 1, 1943–December 31, 1948 would qualify for VA benefits under chapters 23 and 24, including headstones and markers, but not Arlington National Cemetery interment benefits.
  • The Secretary of Defense would have to issue honorable discharges dated as the termination of service to eligible individuals within one year of enactment. Those who receive such discharges would be honored as veterans but would not gain other VA benefits from that discharge beyond the chapter 23 and 24 eligibility.
  • The Secretary of Defense may design and produce a service medal, plaque, or grave marker to honor individuals who receive such discharges.

Cadet Nurse veterans get limited benefits

If enacted, this bill would let the Secretary of Defense issue an honorable discharge within one year to people who served in the United States Cadet Nurse Corps from July 1, 1943 through December 31, 1948, if the Secretary finds the service warrants it. If you get that discharge, this bill would treat that Cadet Nurse Corps service as active duty for eligibility and entitlement to VA benefits under chapters 23 and 24 of title 38, including VA headstones and markers. The bill would say that this Cadet Nurse Corps service would not by itself make you eligible for any other VA-administered benefits, and it would exclude benefits tied solely to burial at Arlington National Cemetery. The Secretary of Defense would also be allowed to design a service medal, plaque, or grave marker to honor those who receive the discharge, and the Secretary would set the official date of discharge.
