Higher tax exclusion for home sales

If you sell your main home and meet the ownership and use tests for a qualifying sale, you would be able to exclude more profit from tax. Single filers would see the exclusion rise from $250,000 to $500,000. Married couples filing jointly would see the exclusion rise from $500,000 to $1,000,000. These changes would apply to qualifying sales and exchanges after the bill is enacted. Starting with tax years that begin after 2025, both limits would be adjusted annually for inflation using the cost-of-living measure (with 2024 substituted into the calculation) and any increase not a multiple of $100 would be rounded down to the nearest $100.
