S3357119th Congress

Social Security Survivor Benefits Equity Act

Sponsored By: Senator Peter Welch

Introduced

Summary

Indexes and raises the Social Security lump-sum death payment. This bill would replace the current flat amount with a $2,900 base and then increase that amount each year by the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers. The annual adjustment would use an October-to-October change and the result would be rounded to the nearest $10. The change would take effect January 1, 2026 and apply to lump-sum payments for individuals who die on or after that date.
