Medicare covers peer support services
If enacted, this bill would add "peer support services" to Medicare coverage when given at certain clinics starting January 1, 2027. Medicare beneficiaries diagnosed with a mental health condition or a substance use disorder would be able to receive peer support at rural health clinics, Federally qualified health centers, community mental health centers, and certified community behavioral health clinics. The bill would also define peer support services and require peer support specialists to be certified under state rules or a Secretary-approved process consistent with national guidelines and SAMHSA core competencies. At the same time, Medicare would not cover peer support services that are furnished outside the listed clinic types.
