Summary
Would remove Medicare's 190-day lifetime limit on inpatient psychiatric hospital care. This bill would change Medicare Part A so beneficiaries could receive inpatient psychiatric hospital services beyond the current 190-day cap when those stays are medically necessary. The change would apply only to inpatient psychiatric hospital services under Medicare Part A and would take effect for services furnished on or after January 1, 2027. It does not alter outpatient mental health benefits or other Medicare programs and does not include new funding.

If enacted, this bill would remove the 190-day lifetime limit on inpatient psychiatric hospital services covered by Medicare Part A. The change would apply only to items and services furnished on or after January 1, 2027. If you have Medicare Part A, you would be able to receive inpatient psychiatric stays beyond the prior 190-day cap when medically necessary.
