Heat Workforce Standards Act of 2026
Sponsored By: Senator Cassidy, Bill [R-LA]
Introduced
Summary
Blocks OSHA’s proposed heat standard. This bill would prohibit the Secretary of Labor from finalizing, implementing, or enforcing the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s proposed “Heat Injury and Illness Prevention in Outdoor and Indoor Work Settings” standard or any substantially similar standard. Sponsors argue the proposal is overly prescriptive, burdensome to businesses, and confusing for workers because it relies on high-heat triggers, strict rest-break and acclimatization rules, and very detailed written safety plans. The bill’s effect is limited to that prohibition and does not create new programs or funding.

Stops OSHA heat-safety rule
This bill would stop the Department of Labor and OSHA from finalizing, implementing, or enforcing the proposed "Heat Injury and Illness Prevention in Outdoor and Indoor Work Settings" rule published August 30, 2024 (89 Fed. Reg. 70698). If enacted, employers would not have to follow that rule or any substantially similar standard. If enacted, workers would not get the heat-safety protections the proposal would have created, such as high-heat triggers, rest-break and acclimatization protocols, and written safety plans. The bill text in this chunk gives no effective date or sunset for the prohibition.
