Firearm Safety Act of 2026
Sponsored By: Senator Booker, Cory A. [D-NJ]
Introduced
Summary
Authorizes the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to issue safety standards for pistols, revolvers, and other firearms. The bill would do this by amending the Consumer Product Safety Act to remove firearms from the statute's exclusion and bring them within the Act's definition of consumer product, enabling the CPSC to create safety rules for firearms while not specifying any particular standards, funding, phase-ins, or enforcement procedures.

New consumer safety rules for guns
This bill would remove the law that keeps pistols, revolvers, and other firearms out of the Consumer Product Safety Act. If enacted, the Consumer Product Safety Commission would be able to write and apply safety standards for firearms. The change would apply to manufacturers, importers, distributors, dealers, purchasers, and owners of firearms and would take effect upon enactment. This would likely improve public safety but would also create new compliance costs for makers and sellers and would likely raise prices or reduce product variety for buyers.
