Summary
Gives Tribes the option to run the Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations under a USDA self-determination framework. This bill would add a new section to the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act allowing the Secretary of Agriculture to enter into self-determination contracts with Tribal governments or Tribal organizations, at a Tribe's request, for FDPIR activities on reservations established under section 4(b) of the Food and Nutrition Act of 2008. The Bureau of Indian Affairs' Office of Self-Governance would provide technical assistance to USDA and to Tribes and Tribal organizations that request help.

Tribes could run reservation food program
If enacted, Tribes would be able to run the Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations after a Tribal resolution. This change would apply only to reservations established under section 4(b) of the Food and Nutrition Act. Contracts would follow the same self-determination rules used for other Tribal programs but name the Department of Agriculture as the agency. The Bureau of Indian Affairs Office of Self-Governance would provide technical help on request. Households served by the program on those reservations would see the program run locally.
