Wildland Firefighter Hazard Pay Correction Act

Hazard pay for smokejumpers and burns

If enacted, this bill would let some federal firefighters get hazard pay for certain duties. It would treat duties that involve igniting, controlling, or suppressing a prescribed burn and parachute jumps by smokejumper firefighters (for training, proficiency, or operational purposes) as hazardous duties. The applicable pay differential would equal the existing fireline hazard pay for fighting forest and range fires. The Director of the Office of Personnel Management would have to issue regulations within 90 days after enactment. The change would apply to pay periods beginning after the earlier of the date those regulations are issued or 90 days after enactment. The bill would not rescind existing hazard-pay duty determinations except as needed to add these duties.
