Grants for PFAS-free firefighter gear
If enacted, the bill would require HHS, through NIOSH, to set up a grant program within 180 days to fund research, development, and testing of PFAS-free turnout gear. The program would authorize $25 million each year for fiscal years 2027 through 2031, subject to appropriations. Grants would be limited to nonprofits, colleges, and national fire-safety organizations that meet experience rules and that partner with firefighting groups to move designs into practice. The bill would also define key program terms, including PFAS and turnout gear, for purposes of the grants.
Training for PFAS-free gear care
If enacted, the bill would require HHS to fund development and dissemination of guidance and training starting in fiscal year 2028 on how firefighters and first responders should wear, decontaminate, and care for PFAS-free turnout gear. The program would authorize $2 million each year for fiscal years 2028 through 2032, subject to appropriations. HHS could use grants, contracts, or cooperative agreements with eligible groups to create and share the training.
