Modernizing Opioid Treatment Access Act 2.0 of 2026

More methadone access at pharmacies

If enacted, this would let certain qualified practitioners get a new federal registration to prescribe methadone for opioid use disorder so patients could fill it at a pharmacy. Prescriptions would have to be electronic, for liquid or dispersible tablets, follow federal and State quantity rules, and could be given alongside clinic care. Maintenance or detox care could be delivered by telemedicine. Practitioners would have to get and document informed consent that explains how privacy rules differ from clinic methadone care, and the Attorney General could stop registrations in a State if the State asks. These rules would take effect 180 days after enactment.
