More accessible older rail stations
This bill would create a grant program to help state and local governments upgrade older rail stations. The government would be authorized $350 million for fiscal year 2027 and each year after. Amounts after 2027 would be adjusted yearly for inflation using the CPI-U. Grants would pay for repairs, retrofits, relocations, planning, and accessibility assessments. Grants would cover up to 80% of a project's net cost; recipients must provide the rest. Covered stations or facilities must be part of rail systems operating before July 26, 1990. Recipients would adopt plans to improve access for people with physical, sensory, and intellectual disabilities and address equity. The Secretary would be encouraged to coordinate with protection-and-advocacy groups and centers for independent living.
