Grants to map county roads
This bill would create a County Road Access and Mapping Pilot within 180 days to give grants to States to digitize county roads. It would authorize $20,000,000 per year for fiscal years 2026 through 2031, and the Secretary could use up to 2% each year for administration. States would apply to run subgrant programs for counties and would serve as the central repository for county road data. State repositories would publish data on a public website, mark public vs private roads, work with mapping platforms, update at least annually, and report to the Secretary within 180 days and then yearly for three years on money given, counties funded, miles digitized, and progress.
No change to road ownership rights
The bill would not let a State or county claim ownership of a road where law does not already give that authority. It would not change a road's legal status for ownership, jurisdiction, or public access. The bill would also bar public release of GIS data about historic, paleontological, or archaeological resources when another law protects that data.
