Introduced

Summary

Standardize training and fund movement-area safety tech for airport vehicle operators. Show full summary
  • Workers and labor: Would push for consistent, recurring training and greater use of instructor-led and technology-enabled systems like simulators and onboard displays to reduce vehicle-involved surface events.
  • Airport sponsors and operators: Would be eligible for grants to buy sensors, displays, communications, positioning, mapping, situational awareness systems, and training subscriptions. Grants prioritize projects that cut surface incidents and address cost or accessibility barriers, and funded projects can still seek other FAA funding.
  • Airlines, ground handlers, and controllers: Would gain formal representation on the Task Force so operational and technical expertise helps shape recommended standards and technology priorities.

Airport grants for movement safety

If enacted, the FAA would be able to give grants to airport sponsors for fiscal years 2027 through 2031 to buy vehicle movement-area technology and to pay for technology-enabled training. Grants would cover hardware, software, sensors, onboard equipment, displays, radios, positioning and mapping systems, situational-awareness tools, and simulators, and would also cover licensing, deployment, operation, maintenance, and recurring use of training software and services. The FAA would prioritize projects that reduce vehicle-involved surface incidents, improve situational awareness and radio communications, can be tailored to a specific airfield, or demonstrate cost or access barriers to buying the technology. These grants would come from amounts available under 49 U.S.C. 47115(j) for FY2027–FY2031, would not be subject to subparagraphs (A)–(D) of that section, and funded projects could still be eligible for other airport funding.
