Summary
Protects Social Security benefits from being offset to collect defaulted federal student loans. This bill would add a new Section 493E to the Higher Education Act to bar Treasury offsets of Social Security payments to recover defaults on loans made, insured, or guaranteed under Title IV Part G. The prohibition applies only to Social Security payments and to Part G loan debts and does not change other collection tools or repayment authorities for those loans.

Stop Student Loan Garnishment of Social Security
This bill would prohibit Treasury and other federal agencies from reducing Social Security payments to collect defaulted federal student loans made, insured, or guaranteed under Title IV Part G. The prohibition would apply starting on the date of enactment. It would only block offsets of payments due under the Social Security Act and would not change other debt collection tools or other Title IV enforcement authorities. Social Security recipients in default on Title IV Part G loans would no longer have part of their benefit checks taken by those offsets.
