REDI Act
Sponsored By: Senator Rosen, Jacky [D-NV]
In Committee
Summary
Creates an interest-free deferment for medical and dental interns and residents. This bill would add a new in-school deferment to the Higher Education Act that lets borrowers in medical or dental internship or residency programs pause federal loan principal payments while interest does not accrue. It amends 20 U.S.C. 1087e(f) to explicitly include an in-training category within the deferment rules. The change suspends both principal obligations and interest accrual for the duration of internship or residency, lowering the cost of loans during intense clinical training.

Pause loan interest for medical residents
If enacted, you would be able to defer federal student loan payments while in a medical or dental internship or residency. During that in-school deferment, you would not have to pay principal and interest would not accrue on the loan. This applies only to loans made under the referenced part of the Higher Education Act. The bill would also reorganize the deferment rules to explicitly include internship and residency training.
