SRES615119th Congress

A resolution celebrating Black History Month.

Sponsored By: Senator Booker, Cory A. [D-NJ]

Passed Senate

Summary

Honors Black History Month and recognizes the enduring contributions and complex history of African Americans. The resolution recounts the forcible arrival of Africans, enslavement, lynchings, segregation, and ongoing vestiges of injustice while highlighting leaders and movements that fought racism and advanced the nation’s cultural, educational, political, artistic, athletic, literary, scientific, and technological life. It notes Carter G. Woodson’s role in starting Negro History Week, the 2016 opening of the National Museum of African American History and Culture, and names many influential African Americans. It frames February as a time for all Americans to reflect, learn from the past, and honor those contributions.
