Celebrating Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander contributions and history. This resolution recognizes May as Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month and urges honoring the community's achievements, histories, and ongoing challenges. It notes the AAPI community includes more than 70 distinct ethnicities, comprises over 25 million Asian Americans and about 1.8 million Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders who together make up more than 10 percent of the U.S. population, recalls milestones from early Japanese immigration and the transcontinental railroad to civic firsts and anniversaries, and highlights rising hate crimes as a reason to observe the month with programs and ceremonies.
