73-231. Permissive preference in private employment. (a) As used in this section, "veteran" shall have the meaning ascribed to it in K.S.A. 73-201, and amendments thereto. (b) There is hereby established a permissive preference in private employment for veterans. (c) A private employer may adopt an employment policy that gives preference in hiring to a veteran, provided that the veteran meets the requirements of the vacant position. (d) Such employment policy shall be: (1) In writing; and (2) applied consistently to all decisions regarding initial employment. (e) The veteran shall submit proof of such veteran's military service and honorable discharge or general discharge under honorable conditions to a private employer with such veterans preference employment policy to establish eligibility for the preference.
