§ 1607. Elections. (a) The general election for the youth congress shall be held on the first Monday in March, and every two years thereafter. The elections for school senators shall be conducted by the school principals at the schools the eligible voters attend, and at which the voters are officially enrolled. Each voter shall be entitled to vote for the number of candidates authorized for his or her school election as provided in 1 CMC § 1604. A voter shall only vote once. (b) It shall be the responsibility of the school principal or the Legislative Bureau as appropriate to provide forms for petitions, ballots and tally sheets, the necessary ballot boxes and personnel to supervise the election, count and tally the ballots. The Commonwealth Election Commission shall cooperate and make available to the greatest extent practicable, the resources of the Commonwealth Election Commission to support the tasks and activities of the youth congress elections at no cost. (c) Results of the election shall be verified by the respective school principals, then forwarded to the Floor Leader of the House of Representatives, for certification within three days after the election. The certified results shall be forwarded to the Governor, Commissioner of Education, the respective school principals, and the presiding officers of the Legislature. (d) Any disputes resulting from the election shall be resolved by the chairman of the House Standing Committee on Judiciary and Governmental Operations or its successor. Commission Comment: The Commission corrected an incorrect crossreference to 1 CMC § 1605 in PL 10-18, § 2. PL 16-23 § 4 provides for amendment to 1 CMC § 1607 but only included an amendment to subsection (a) in the content of PL 16-23 § 4. The Commission left subsections (b)-(d) unchanged.
