§ 4872. Commonwealth Museum: Established. There is hereby created the Commonwealth Museum of History and Culture, a public corporation, to be headed by an executive director, under the direction of a policy-making Museum Board of Governors. The museum is established to carry out the broad mandate of N.M.I. Const. art. XIV, § 3 and the purposes of this article. The museum shall function as the official repository and custodian of the historical and cultural artifacts of the Commonwealth, and related materials. The museum is mandated to acquire, preserve and make available such artifacts, with authoritative interpretation, to the general public, to scholars and to visitors. Subject to the availability of appropriate governmental or other facilities, as determined by the board, artifacts shall be preserved and made available to the public in the senatorial district where the artifacts were found or recovered. The board shall make every effort to ensure the availability of appropriate facilities in every senatorial district. The museum shall foster research on the artifacts in its inventory and shall disseminate the results of this and other research through museum exhibitions, demonstrations, lectures and other public programs and publications. According to PL 3-90, §7(a) (reprinted in the preface material, prior to title 1), “section headings . . . do not in any manner affect the scope, meaning, or intent of the provisions of this Code.”
