§ 9145. Death on Board: Burial Expenses. In the case of death of a seaman occurring on board the vessel or in case of a death occurring on shore, if, at the time, the seaman was entitled to medical care and maintenance at the shipowner’s expense, the shipowner shall be liable to defray reasonable local funeral expenses and make payment of the base wages of the deceased seaman up to the end of the month in which the death occurs.
