SDCL § 46A-10A-109

The results from the initial election for trustees shall determine the length of term each trustee shall hold. The candidate with the most votes shall be elected for a three - year term, the candidate with the second highest vote total shall be elected for a two - year term and the candidate with the third highest vote total shall be elected for a one - year term. The term of office for a trustee elected at a succeeding election shall be three years or until the trustee's successor has qualified. Source: SL 1997, ch 256 , § 12.
