Adisseo is publicly known for animal feed methionine (poultry amino acids), but methionine is also an essential amino acid in human parenteral nutrition (TPN — total parenteral nutrition). Patients who cannot eat (post-surgery, severe GI disease, critically ill) receive amino acid solutions intravenously that include L-methionine as one of eight essential amino acids. Hospital TPN bags contain pharmaceutical-grade L-methionine from chemical manufacturers including Adisseo and competitors. The identical sulfur-containing amino acid molecule that optimizes broiler chicken breast yield in a Tyson grow-out farm is also sustaining the lives of patients in ICUs who have no other nutrition source. A methionine supply disruption simultaneously affects poultry feed efficiency in 50+ countries AND the availability of hospital IV nutrition for critically ill patients. Adisseo originated as the animal nutrition division of Rhone-Poulenc, the French chemical and pharmaceutical company that later merged with Hoechst to form Aventis (and ultimately Sanofi after Sanofi acquired Aventis in 2004). The animal nutrition business (methionine, vitamins, enzymes) was separated during the Aventis era and acquired by China National BlueStar Group in 2006 for approximately $700 million. BlueStar is a subsidiary of ChemChina, a Chinese state enterprise controlled by the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission (SASAC) of China's State Council. This means a Chinese state enterprise controls approximately 25% of global methionine production — the amino acid that is the first-limiting nutrient in nearly all broiler chicken and pig diets in the Western hemisphere. US poultry companies (Tyson, Pilgrim's Pride, Perdue) depend on Adisseo for a critical feed input controlled by a Chinese government entity. No US or European company produces methionine at equivalent scale, meaning the Western poultry supply chain has Chinese state enterprise dependency embedded at its feedstock level.
