Did you know2023
ChemChina (China National Chemical Corporation, Chinese state-owned) controls two of the world's most critical agricultural input companies: Adisseo (~25% of global methionine for animal feed) and Syngenta (~20% of global crop protection chemicals, acquired 2017 for $43B). These are the upstream inputs for two separate halves of global food production: methionine feeds the livestock that produce meat and eggs; crop protection chemicals protect the crops that become animal feed and human food. Through ChemChina/Sinochem ownership, the Chinese government holds significant influence over the cost and availability of both livestock nutrition inputs AND crop protection chemistry globally. This dual control of animal-side AND crop-side agricultural inputs is unprecedented among any single national government's commercial ownership positions in global food supply chains.

Adisseo's Rhodimet AT88 liquid methionine has become the industry standard for large-scale poultry feed operations globally. Its liquid form allows precise automated dosing in large compound feed mills — whereas dry DL-methionine requires additional batching and dust management. Adisseo's Commentry, France plant (historic Rhône-Poulenc site) and two Chinese plants (Nanjing, Guangan) together produce ~500,000 MT/year of methionine equivalent. In 2024, Adisseo announced a 100,000 MT expansion at Nanjing — shifting the geographic center of production further toward China. This expansion trend means that Chinese state-owned Adisseo is concentrating its methionine production capacity in China, which could make it easier for the Chinese government to exercise leverage over global methionine supply (analogous to Chinese rare earth export controls) in a future trade conflict.
Adisseo SA ↗Origin2023
Adisseo traces to the methionine business of Rhône-Poulenc (French chemical giant), which was consolidated into Rhodia (Rhône-Poulenc specialty chemicals spin-off) and then carved out as Adisseo. China National Bluestar (a subsidiary of state-owned ChemChina) acquired Adisseo from Rhodia in 2006 for approximately €400 million — a relatively small transaction that was overlooked at the time. In the decade following, the strategic significance of controlling 25%+ of global methionine supply became apparent: methionine is the essential amino acid that allows modern poultry production at industrial scale — without methionine supplementation, chicken feed protein efficiency drops dramatically, requiring much more soy and corn per kilogram of chicken meat. The 2006 acquisition made Chinese state interests a controlling owner of a critical European-heritage specialty chemical company that sits at the foundation of global poultry production.
